Hi!

Excellent episode. Really enjoyed going down these winding conversation corridors with y'all. I did watch the film first (per your request during the intro) and found it to be the kind of dreamlike trip I typically go for. I actually didn't find the film confusing since I'm not really a plot or narrative-forward film watcher, though my knowledge of the texts Kumel was pulling from was like dusting out castle cobwebs from my memory palace (former English grad over here), but familiarity with the lore wasn't that important. Was def reminded of Jean Rollin, but also Andrzej Żuławski (particularly 1972's The Devil), Lucio Fulci, and Sam Fuller's Shock Corridor, weirdly enough. Kumel is a blindspot for me, but I felt instantly comfortable with all the 70's snap zooms and gothic aesthetic. Orson Welles showing Gen Z how to bed rot was iconic. Georges Delerue's score was lush and darkly romantic. Was Jan a hunk? Seems like every woman, whether god or human, wanted to jump his bones. Maybe it's the mysterious charisma black hole technique of sitting in a corner stoically with arms folded. Either way, the incestous vibes with his sister was a choice. Cassavius MVP. Old guy spitting fire brought down the house. So many corridors! Thanks for putting this on my radar. I'm poor and can't afford the Radiance discs at the moment, so had to settle for an upload on some weird website, but maybe there's a Rewind & Revive promo code? :)

Again, thanks for the intelligent discussion and for shedding light on films like this!

Jericho! Thank you so much for this thoughtful comment and especially for taking the time to listen to a two-hour podcast (!!). I love that you describe watching Malpertuis as a dreamlike trip, because that’s exactly the headspace we hoped listeners would bring to it.

Also, ahhh, I feel like a fool for not immediately thinking of Żuławski (The Devil especially, as you say). Totally spot on! And Orson Welles absolutely inventing luxury bed rot decades ahead of schedule is forever legendary, agreed, haha.

I’m so glad this put Kümel on your radar. And re: Radiance — sadly no promo code (I wish!). Thanks again for listening so thoughtfully and for taking the time to write this. It means the world :)
