Beautifully written as always. Is Kiarostami your favorite filmmaker? Gotta be at least Top 5 (if you engage in that kind of binary ranking, of course) :)
Thank you so much for reading :) You’re right on the money when it comes to both — I suffer so much with ranking my favorite filmmakers (I just truly love so many for different reasons), but if I *had* to choose, Kiarostami would probably make that Top 5 list every time. I find that even when it comes to writing about his work, the thoughts just seem to flow!
That's great. It's always so rewarding when you discover a filmmaker that "clicks." I'd like to do a run of his filmography soon (still have a few blindspots). What are your thoughts on 24 Frames? That's one BluRay I'll throw on when I'm in an anxious state and it always calms my nervous system. I guess a lot of Kiarostami's work is like that :)
Also, I'm sure you saw that Criterion is releasing a 17 film Set as part of their Eclipse Series this Nov!
I have a few blind spots myself — including 24 Frames! Unsure why I’ve put it off, but hearing you say it’s calming is definitely reason enough to give it a whirl soon :) and yes, I did see the Eclipse series release! Happy day, I’m so thrilled more folks are getting into his work and there seems to be a thriving Kiarostami resurgence
